ONCHAN DISTRICT COMMISSIONERS

How the Commissioners Work

There are seven commissioners who are elected by the voters of Onchan. The purpose of the commissioners is to set policy and make decisions relevant to Onchan. The staff employed are there to carry out the policy in the day to day running of the authority.

Residents noticing street lights not working, damaged play equipment, dirty public conveniences or the likes should report these matters direct to the commissioners’ office rather than ringing up a commissioner late at night. They can only ring in the next day so a call has been wasted.

The Board of Commissioners meet on the first three Mondays of the month at 7pm. There is a public section to the meeting of the board which the public can attend but are not permitted to speak.

COMMISSIONERS’ SURGERY

Each month the public are given the opportunity to speak face to face with two commissioners. These “Surgeries” have been in existence for over 30 years and are there in case a member of the public feels they are not getting a proper response from the officers or wish to speak about a delicate matter. The surgeries are not for housing applicants to restate information already provided on their application form.

The date for the monthly surgery is shown on the Community Calendar provided within this website but generally speaking is the first Tuesday of each month.
