Ean Kennaugh Convery

It is with deep regret that we mourn the passing of a former District Surveyor to this Authority, Mr Ean Convery. Following a relatively short illness Ean passed away on the morning of Tuesday 20 th November 2007 and we offer our deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

Ean had worked for, and with the Authority for many years firstly as a consultant through Kay and Gill Architects and latterly as the District Surveyor before taking early retirement in November 2005.

Onchan has been shaped by Ean’s influence since the 1960’s where, working at Kay and Gill, he was involved in the layout of the Birch Hill estate. The Commissioners housing developments at Ashley Park, Ballachrink, Springfield Court, Barrule Drive and Heywood Park, as well as the shops and war memorial on the Main Road all have evidence of Ean’s architectural touch. His influence did not diminish when he joined the Authority in 1994 where, as District Surveyor he oversaw the developments of Marion Court and Heywood Court as well as the extension and alterations to the Commissioners offices.

It is not only Onchan that has benefited from Ean’s influence there are many examples of his architecture elsewhere on the Island and since his retirement from the Commissioners Ean has sat on the Planning Committee where his many years of experience have helped give due consideration to planning issues.

Ean was well liked and respected not only by those who worked with him, but by the many others who came into contact with him. His wealth of knowledge and his calm demeanour is the envy of the many that he has been associated with and will be sadly missed.
