One of the Millennium projects that the commissioners decided to carry
out was to have Onchan photographed from the air.
This was undertaken in conjunction with Island Photographics of 37 Bucks
Road, Douglas in 2001. Both the urban and rural areas were covered and
the following are examples of the many photographs taken.

Taken during the early days of
the construction of the new apartments on the site of the former

its outdoor swimming pool and extensive grounds. The coastal footpath

Another photograph of construction
work. Here the site of the former of the Douglas Bay Hotel is being
excavated for the basement car park to be provided beneath the
new office block which has now been constructed on the site. Beyond
are the houses of Royal Avenue, Royal Terrace and Falkland Drive.
Also in the picture is Port Jack Glen which originally opened out
onto the beach but in the 1890s the whole area in between (under
the shops) was filled with stone excavated from the cliff face
to create King Edward Road and the electric railway track.

Taken in the top corner of Birch
Hill Park, this photo shows some of the fields of Ballachrink Farm
and houses in Birch Hill Crescent, Highfield Crescent, Highfield
Close and Sunnybank Avenue. In the foreground is the Hillberry
Road, part of the TT Course. The triangular plot of land to the
left is part of the Centenary Park which is being gradually reclaimed
from the former Hillberry Tip to be a place of public recreation
in years to come. Above that is the covered reservoir that serves
the upper part of Onchan.
