CHRISTMAS TREES GET RECYCLED

Xmas Tree Recycle Christmas trees brought to the Commissioners' Office Car Park following Twelfth Night (6th January) were shredded on Monday 9th on site by the parks staff. Over 80 trees were shredded during the day and as the week progressed another 50 trees from the exterior of properties in the centre of the village went the same way as did the large outside trees from Lazy Corner, the Commissioners' Office, Springfield Court and Heywood Court. The resultant chippings have been spread on the ground at Centenary Park.

ARBOUR WEEK 2006

Tree PlantingThe annual tree planting ceremony took place on Monday 6th March at Sunnybank Avenue in Birch Hill Park. A total of eleven trees were planted in two ceremonies. At 2pm trees were planted by representatives of Onchan Jubilee WI, Avondale WI, Onchan Townswomen's Guild and the Friends of Onchan's Heritage. All those at that event are pictured in the photograph.

In the early evening cubs from the 2nd Onchan Troop planted seven trees in the verge alongside one of the spur roads connecting Sunnybank Avenue with Highfield Crescent. When Sunnybank Avenue was laid out in the early 1970s it incorporated a grassed verge between the road and footpath. This gave an excellent opportunity to create "an avenue" of trees and so Arbor Week planting for many years has been undertaken in this boulevard. Next year will see the completion of the scheme.

NEW CHAIRMAN

New Chairman

On 2nd May 2006 the commissioners held their annual meeting and Derek Crellin was elected Chairman of Onchan District Commissioners for the municipal year 2006 – 2007.

Here he is pictured being congratulated by his predecessor Gordon Astill who installed him with the chain of office. The installation took place in the newly refurbished boardroom which has been decorated in the minimalist style and no longer has photographs of past chairman going back to 1894 on the walls.

CROSH POBBLE CHONNAGHYN (The Onchan Cross)

Onchan Cross

Winner of the Crosh Pobble Chonnaghyn (the Onchan Cross) which is awarded bi-annually is Jean Davie who is pictured here holding the award which was the idea of Peter Karran, one of the Onchan MHKs who long felt that there should be recognition for the voluntary work of people residing in Onchan.

Onchan Cross

The trustees of the Crosh Pobble Chonnaghyn are the Chairman of the Commissioners, The Captain of the Parish and Peter Karran.

Nominations for the award are requested periodically and this year’s nominator was Mrs Sheila Astill who put forward Miss Davie principally for her work with the Onchan Methodist Church but also for illustrating a cookery book produced to raise funds for the restoration of the Village Hall.

Here the new Chairman of the Commissioners is photographed with Miss Davie and the trustees who made the award.

Onchan Cross

The Crosh Pobble Chonnaghyn was designed and made by the late Maureen Costain Richards of Port St Mary.

The cross depicted is taken from one of the wheel crosses in St Peter’s Church. Archibald Knox took the same cross for his design of the Village War Memorial which stands in the middle of the village and was carved out of Irish Limestone by Thomas Quayle of St George’s Street in Douglas.

Previous winners of the Crosh Pobble Chonnaghyn are Gordon Astill, Ena Faragher and David Quirk.
