On Saturday 7th July another Village Fair was held on the Village Green. Organised
by the commissioners, stalls were set up by various groups and societies
from Onchan.
To assist with safety, Church Road was closed to traffic
and this also provided a safe passage for people attending to cross to
the forecourt of Hadyn Minay's garage where teas were being served by
the Onchan Methodist Ladies. Rides for the children were also located
in this area.
The platform party, Mrs Karen Norton, Tim Norton JP and Mrs Wendy
Megson prepare for the official opening by the Chairman of the
Commissioners Mr Norton. Mrs Megson is the current chairman
of the Leisure and Amenities Committee who are responsible for
parks, open spaces and special promotions. |
Chairman of the Onchan Pensioners Club and Onchan
AFC, David Quirk poses with some of the many visitors to the fair.
|
Mrs Megson collects money for the Onchan Youth Development Fund
which has sponsored teenage boys and girls from Onchan on sailing
ships, scout jamborees and other events over the years. Beside
her is Chris Quirk the commissioners' Community Officer who was
on duty at the time .
|
Many of the clubs now have gazebos which they set
up over their stalls and it helps to create the atmosphere of a fair.
|
Helpers from the Onchan Live at Home Scheme pose for the camera
behind their bric-a-brac stall during the course of the afternoon.
|
The St Vincent de Paul Society from St Anthony's
Church has a second hand book stall to boost their funds which
are used to help people in need. Beyond them is the Onchan
Live at Home stall.
|
The steps to the village cross provide a welcome
seat for those who needed it. The cross was erected during
Millennium Year (2000) and was based on one of the carved crosses
to be found in St Peter's Church and was set on a plinth in a similar
way to the old village cross at Kirk Michael.
|
Onchan Silver Band performed several times during
the afternoon. Here they are pictured with their musical
director Paul Dunderdale standing with his back to the camera.
|
The Onchan Entertainers have long supported events
in Onchan and here one of their troupes line up ready for a performance.
|
The closed road facilitated the setting up of a
merry-go-round together with another play section (out of the picture)
for the young children. |
One of the grassed areas at the Village Green was
kept clear for performances and the Onchan Entertainers made good
use of it. |
Onchan Ladies Choir returned this year after an
absence last year but they came back with voices full of gusto.
|
Another return visitor this year was Ken Elworthy
who brought Punch and Judy with him to entertain the children and
some of the adults too! |
