MAJOR ROAD WORKS IN ONCHAN SEPTEMBER 2007

Road WorksWork on a total resurfacing of parts of Main Road and Whitebridge Road started on Saturday 8th September with a road closure of Main Road from its junction with Church Avenue to its junction with School Road/Whitebridge Road. This was to carry out planing of the present surface with the road re-opening in the late afternoon once the work was
complete.

The following day the road closed again whilst the base coat of tarmacadam was applied. This still resulted in ramps down between the normal road level and the base coat but at least the manhole covers were not as proud as the evening before.

Road Works
On Monday 10th September work continued along Whitebridge Road but traffic was kept flowing in a single lane controlled by traffic lights. These photographs show the planing machine which cuts up the road surface to a required depth and then throws the shredded tarmacadam into the back of a waiting lorry by way of an integral elevator.

The laying of the base coat of tarmacadam along Whitebridge Road was undertaken during the week with traffic kept flowing in single lane and then transferring to the other side of the road on top of the new surface. Emergency measures had to be adopted to provide for a temporary school crossing patrol close to the School Road/Whitebridge Road junction as both the zebra crossing in front of the commissioners' office and the pelican crossing by the Baptist Church were out of action due to the removal of road markings.

RoadworksOn Saturday 15th September the road from Onchan Library to just beyond the School Road junction was closed to traffic while the top coat of macadam was applied. This was also taken beyond along Whitebridge Road. Planning and re-surfacing on the remainder of Whitebridge Road continued but working from the Lakeside Gardens end working back up hill to the crest of the rise just beyond the Ballachrink Estate junction.
