ONCHAN HAS A STATUEFrom its commanding position at the junction of Hague Crescent and Imperial Terrace this statue of TT winner and twice World Superbike Champion, Steve Hislop was unveiled on Sunday 5th June 2005. The site was selected because Steve had lived in Onchan for some years and at the time it had been anticipated that the TT museum would be built on the Summerland site and this would overlook it. |
The sculptor of the bronze statue was David Annand of Scotland who came to the island for the unveiling. He is also producing a second statue which will be erected at Wilton Lodge Park, Hawick near to Steve's former home town. Here David is seen with Steve's mother Margaret watched by a very good turn out of the general public. |
The unveiling was undertaken by Margaret Hislop and Geoff Duke OBE who are pictured together in the centre of the picture. Geoff's wife Daisy is on the right of the picture whilst Steve's two sons Arran and Connor, with their mother Kelly Bailey, are also pictured holding special stamp issues of their father as presented to them by Isle of Man Post. |
A large number of visiting motorbike fans as well as locals were present in the morning for the unveiling ceremony on Mad Sunday. The statue stands out head and shoulders over the crowds as will be seen in this picture. |
