Torchlight Procession 6th December 2005

On 6th December 2005 the commissioners held another procession through the village but this year instead of burning wax torches the participants were carrying lanterns and the children had glowsticks.

Torchlight processions were introduced in 1991 at the suggestion of Ray Kniveton who was at that time a member of the Onchan District Commissioners.  He also put forward the ides of Christmas trees on brackets which could also be used for flags in the summer months.  This was something he had seen whilst on holiday in England and brought the idea back with him.

The procession through darkened streets was led by the Onchan Silver Band followed by the Chairman of the Commissioners, Peter Karran MHK, Rev. Malcolm Convery and Rev. Christopher Belfield.  Following them was Rudolph and Santa courtesy of Onchan Rotary and on loan from Douglas Rotary.

At Springfield Court car park the carol singing was led by Geoff Corkish and a short address was given by Rev. Belfield.
