TRAFALGAR FAIR

On Saturday 9th July 2005 as part of Manx National Week, Onchan District Commissioners promoted Trafalgar Fair in Nivison Stadium, Onchan Park. The Department of Tourism had been promoting SEA Isle of Man 2005 as part of the UK national celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar and Onchan has a claim to a little bit of history from that great event.

Lieutenant Louis Buckle Reeves was a very young marine officer on board the Victory and he appears in West's famous painting of The Death of Nelson.

Following his retirement from the service in 1817 he took up residence in the Isle of Man, firstly in Douglas and then in Onchan where he lived for many years until his death in 1861. By that time he was the last surviving officer to have served at the Battle of Trafalgar. That fact is recorded on his headstone in St Peter's Churchyard.

The St John Ambulance were in attendance with a stall made in the shape of a boat. Here Hilary McCormick adds a nautical flavour to her uniform for the fair.

Brothers Billy and Jack Thompson bear a distinct likeness to the 118 - 118 characters used to advertise the telephone enquiry facility. As pirates however they gained second prize in the junior class of the fancy dress competition.

The helpers on the St Peter's Ladies Group stall got into the sprit of the event with their sailor boy outfits but none were prepared to do the hornpipe for the photographer.

Even members of Onchan Silver Band broke ranks and sailed under the skull and cross bones with Long John Silver.
