A Century of Manx Service

Harvey Briggs Onchan Library is hosting an exhibition for The Royal British Legion Onchan Branch in celebration of their 80th Anniversary. 2018 also marks 100 years since the end of World War One, and a Centenary for the RAF.

The theme of the display is ‘A Century of Manx Service – A Village Celebrates’ and incorporates some fascinating stories, photographs and memorabilia contributed by the local community.

One of the highlights is an opportunity to see the paintings and sketches of Island resident and Burma Star Association member, James Fenton F.R.P.S. His work was created on active service in Burma and India 1942 – 1946, but is of such quality it looks as if it were painted in a studio. James Fenton has written a book about his experiences – The Forgotten Army: A Burma Soldier’s Story in Letters, Photographs and Sketches.

Everyone is welcome to call in to the library to see the display which is open until Saturday 17th November. The legion have organised a fun ‘Onchan revisited’ Competition with some great prizes, and we have all the information about the fantastic programme of events they have arranged. Details are also available online from their facebook page.
