COVID-19 Cleaning and Disposal of Waste

Advice issued from Public Health England regarding the management of waste including used tissues and masks, from an individual is self-isolation because of the Coronavirus and how to deal with their household waste:-

Cleaning and disposal of waste

Use your usual household products, such as detergents and bleach, as these will be very effective at getting rid of the virus on surfaces. Clean frequently touched surfaces regularly. Personal waste (such as used tissues) and disposable cleaning cloths should be put in disposable rubbish bags and tied when full. All lids on Refuse Bins must be closed before the Refuse Team will collect them.

Advice on Double Bagging

The disposable rubbish bags should be placed into a second bag, tied securely and kept separate from other waste in the room in which you are self-isolating. It should be put in a suitable and secure place and marked for storage until the individual’s test results are known. Keep aside for at least 72 hours before putting into your usual external household waste bin. Other household waste can be disposed of as normal.

Waste should be stored safely and kept away from children. You should not put your waste in communal waste areas until negative test results are known or the waste has been stored for at least 72 hours.

• If the individual tests negative, this can be put in with the normal waste.
• If the individual tests positive, then store it for at least 72 hours and put in with the normal waste.

Bring Banks
Recycling from Bring banks around Onchan with the exception of those located at The Hub Car Park, School Road, will stop from Wednesday 6th January 2021 until further notice.

Energy from Waste Plant (EfW)
Suez has an EfW contingency plan which it will implement when there is a confirmed Covid19 case on Island. Put simply, this will involve the isolation of control room staff to ensure the Plant can resource the 24/7 operation of the primary incinerator. Key to the success of the plan is preventing exposure to the virus in the Plant.
Those operatives accessing the Plant to deliver the collected waste will follow advice re preventing the spread of infection through e.g. the use of nitrile gloves, hand gel, and effective hand washing.
