Weed Spraying

🌿 Why We Spray

Weed spraying helps keep our public areas tidy, safe, and accessible. Weeds can damage pavements, block drainage, create trip hazards, and make public areas harder to maintain. Regular weed control helps keep the community looking clean and well cared for.

📅 When Spraying Takes Place

Weed spraying will take place twice a year:

  • First Spray: March–May.

  • Second Spray: July–September.

This schedule may alter slightly depending on the weather conditions.

📍 Where Spraying Occurs

Public areas across the district are divided into five zones. Each zone will be sprayed during the scheduled periods.

A full timetable is available at the bottom of this page.

🛠️ How Spraying Is Carried Out

Barclay, Gallup Biograde Amenity Glyphosate is used, and is applied by trained staff. Spraying is targeted directly at weeds to reduce environmental impact, the herbicide used is a post emergent herbicide which needs the plants to be fully grown to take effect. The team avoid spraying in poor weather, near schools during busy times, and around sensitive areas. Temporary signs will be placed out to let the public know spraying is in progress.

⚠️ Safety Information

The products used are approved for use in public spaces and near watercourses. Once the spray has dried, treated areas are safe to walk on, there will be a trace of blue dye which will remain, which is used to monitor the locations attended. This is harmless and non-toxic. Please keep children and pets away from freshly sprayed areas until dry. If spraying is happening in your street, operators may ask you to keep clear for a few minutes.

🤝 How You Can Help

Avoid parking on verges and kerbs during scheduled spray periods. Keep paths clear so operators can reach weeds in the areas with the lance. Report any areas where weeds are becoming a problem.

Manual Weed Removal
Once an area has been sprayed it will be programmed for approximately a fortnight after the spray to re-attend the area to manually remove the weeds after the herbicide has taken effect, this will be done with hoes, weed rippers and the road sweeper. Please do continue to avoid parking on verges, pavements and areas where the team will need to access the kerb edges.
